Hot water systems almost never die without warning — they grumble, leak and fade first. Catch the signs early and you replace on your schedule, at your price. Miss them and you’re cold-showering while paying emergency rates. Here’s what to look for.
It’s past its eighth birthday
Check the sticker on the cylinder for the manufacture date. Most systems are built to last 8–12 years — coastal salt air on the North-West often shortens that. Past eight, it’s living on borrowed time and deserves an annual check.
Rusty or discoloured hot water
Brown or metallic-tasting water from the hot taps only usually means the tank is corroding from the inside. Once rust reaches the water, the cylinder wall is thinning — failure is a matter of when, not if.
Rumbling, banging or popping sounds
Sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank and traps water underneath it — the noise is that water boiling through the crust. It makes the system work harder, cost more to run, and wear out faster.
Water pooling around the base
A little water from the relief valve now and then is normal. A constant drip, or water pooling at the base of the cylinder, is not. Small leaks in a pressurised tank only ever go one direction.
Hot water runs out faster than it used to
If showers are getting shorter, sediment is eating your tank’s capacity or a heating element is on its way out. Either way, the system is telling you it’s struggling.
Temperature that swings hot and cold
Fluctuating temperature mid-shower points to a failing thermostat or tempering valve. Beyond the annoyance, a faulty tempering valve is a scald risk — especially for kids and older family members.
Power or gas bills creeping up
An ageing system quietly works harder to deliver the same water. If your bills are climbing with no change in household habits, your hot water system is a prime suspect — it’s typically the biggest energy user in a Tasmanian home.
Why replacing before failure beats waiting
A planned replacement means you choose the system, the size and the day — with a written fixed price. A burst cylinder means an emergency call-out, whatever’s available that day, and very often a soaked laundry or ceiling. Same new system; very different week.

Go and read the manufacture date on your cylinder, and write it somewhere you’ll find it. If it’s over eight years old — or you spotted any sign on this list — it’s worth a professional look before winter puts it under full load.
